Gladys Wanga has formally accepted the resignation of Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga, bringing to an end a partnership that had faced strain in recent months. The Governor cited “persistent and irreconcilable differences” that she said had affected the unity and focus of the county executive.
In a statement released on February 27, 2026, Wanga confirmed that she had received Magwanga’s resignation letter dated February 26, 2026. She declared the position of Deputy Governor vacant in line with Article 181(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 32C(b) of the County Governments Act.
The Governor noted that before the 2022 General Election, Magwanga had expressed interest in contesting for the gubernatorial seat. However, following consultations within the Orange Democratic Movement, he agreed to serve as her running mate in the interest of party unity.
After taking office, he carried out his duties as Deputy Governor and was also assigned the role of County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock Development. According to Wanga, he received full backing from the administration while serving in those roles.
She explained that the resignation followed what she described as a “sustained preoccupation with future political ambitions,” which she said gradually affected his dedication to the responsibilities of the office.
The Governor also pointed to his decision to oppose the ODM candidate in the Kasipul by-election as a development that raised concerns about unity and alignment with the county government’s agenda.
“The people of Homa Bay are entitled to full-time, undivided service from their executive leadership,” Governor Wanga said.
Despite the leadership change, she assured residents that government functions would continue without interruption. She stated that service delivery, development projects and county operations remain on course, and that the vacancy in the Deputy Governor’s office will be handled strictly within the law.
On behalf of the county administration and residents, Wanga thanked Magwanga for his service and wished him well in his future plans.
“Notwithstanding these differences, this administration has remained steadfast in delivering its mandate,” she said.
Magwanga stepped down on Thursday, citing irreconcilable differences with the Governor. His exit marked the close of a working relationship that had reportedly been under pressure for several months.
Speaking after his resignation, Magwanga said, “I leave office with my conscience clear and my commitment to the people of Homa Bay County unwavering.”
“My resolve to advocate for integrity and proper management of public resources and the fulfilment of our county remains stronger than ever, ”he added.
